Justin Bekkering
Born and raised in Lethbridge, Alta., Justin Bekkering carved out a career in hockey, playing in
Canada’s Western Hockey League before playing in Europe. He played for 13 years in Europe
before becoming a coach for his last five years there. A phone call from his uncle, Ron Cumming, at
Brandon Bearing Ag and Industrial Supply drew him back to Western Canada.
The adventurous nature that moved Bekkering to another continent now informed his transition
back home with a wife and two kids. Learning to take over the family’s business, he replaced
his coach credentials with a general manager title. He has worked for Brandon Bearing for six years.
CARM has influenced Brandon Bearing’s leadership team for a long time, with Bekkering’s uncle
serving as a board member. Seeing the long-term value of CARM has not been lost on Bekkering.
He recognizes that to understand industry, CARM is a critical resource his company must embrace
and use.
As part of his board-member role, Bekkering looks forward to networking with his peers and
expanding the rural construction industry’s role within the province. Looking at the future of
Brandon Bearing, which services the agricultural, commercial and construction trades in western
Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan, and the trajectory of his transcendent career, who knows how
far Bekkering will extend CARM’s reach.
Jherrad Cumming
Zenith Paving is a family business for third-generation Jherrad Cumming. Groomed to take over,
Cumming acquired his business administration diploma to enhance his knowledge of the business’
internal matters. Cumming plans to take on a general manager role within the company, assisting
with office operations and outside operations.
Cummings has always desired to succeed his father and uncle – who also own Brandon Bearing.
Cummings has worked at both locations, but ultimately decided to move to Zenith Paving in 2015.
Fellow board member, Bekkering, took over Cumming’s position to run the store. With some overlap,
Cumming struck up a relationship with Bekkering during this time, intending to partner when
they lead their respective companies.
Cumming’s family has held a long relationship with CARM. His grandfather, who managed
Wheat City Concrete, a construction company, was part of the organization when it went by the
Brandon Builders Exchange. Cumming’s dad was also CARM’s president in the early to mid-’90s,
introducing him to the rural construction industry’s community spirit.
Becoming a board member had been on Cumming’s mind before his nomination. He wanted
to give back to the industry as a whole. He also sees the role as an opportunity to establish himself
within the construction industry by meeting new people and building meaningful relationships.
