and leaving those spaces and always wore masks on site. All tools
and surfaces were cleaned daily.
In addition to following all provincial regulations, CW2 created
its own “COVID Safe Work Procedure” and any reported illness
was tracked, issues related to each situation documented, records
of those notes and conversations saved and employees screened
before they could return to work, says LaBuick.
“And, luckily, through all of our work there we never had any
issue with someone getting COVID-19,” said McTavish.
CW2, which is COR and ISnet certified, “follows all protocols
for stringent jobsite safety,” LaBuick said.
As the personal care homes remained in operation during construction,
additional precautions were taken to ensure the comfort
and safety of the locked-down residents. These included installing
hoarding to separate the areas under renovation from the rest of the
building, sealing off all air passage points between them and running
negative air machines continuously in workspaces.
Creative solutions
Renovations included the installation of new air purification and
ventilation equipment designed specifically for visitation rooms,
automatic doors to provide separate and touchless access for residents
coming from inside the main buildings and visitors from the
outside, and the use of durable and easy-to-clean surfaces. Supplychain
disruptions caused by the global pandemic made coordinating
the supply and delivery of construction materials especially challenging,
and it wasn’t always possible to provide exactly what the
drawings called for and still hit the required deadlines.
“We really had to be creative with a few things, suggesting alternates
or coming up with workaround solutions,” said LaBuick.
