per metric tonne in November 2020, to
$1,300 to $1,400 per metric tonne.
All these increases have a had a major
impact on quoting for projects, both
lumber and steel providers are not able to
hold quotes for more than seven to 15 days
which is affecting bids on tenders. As this
persists, contractors and subcontractors
need to ensure they are using contracts like
the Canadian Construction Association’s
(CCA) CCA 1 stipulated price contracts
to ensure they can adjust prices as changes
occur, thus protecting their bids and
investments. Another piece to consider to
protect yourselves is reviewing your insurance
policies. Due to the increased costs,
ensure your insurance covers the actual
cost of materials in case of an accident
(fire or theft).
We have had some successes in the
past six months, we were able to work
with several associations in Manitoba and
with CCA to have the preferred contractor
clause removed from Saskatchewan tenders.
The clause that was put in place by the
Saskatchewan government was intended
to protect their contractors, but was detrimental
to the construction industry and
was clearly in contrast with the free trade

agreements across the provinces. This was
repealed thanks to the great work by CCA
and our associations. In dealing with situations
like these, we have been able to build
better ties with Mechanical Contractors

Building Trades, Construction Labour
Relations Association of Manitoba and
the Winnipeg Construction Association,
which has increased our voice and impact
for the construction industry.
PlanPoint is continuing to run strong,
in 2020 we were able to provide 2,248 bidding
opportunities to our members and
we are forecasting to provide even more in
2021. This is in part due to the provincial
government’s commitment to provide $3
billion over 10 years in combined federal,
provincial and other partner investments.
The importance of the construction
industry in re-starting our economy is
paramount and each of you plays a key part
in this.
What is coming? The uncertainty of
2021 is still on our minds, but we are
not going to let that stop us. We have
started planning for our 39th Annual Golf
Tournament which will be taking place
on Aug. 13, 2021, at the Wheat City Golf
Course in Brandon. The day will be full of
sunshine, fun and the chance to make and
strengthen connections. We are also in the
planning stage for our annual banquet,
which we are hoping to hold in November
2021. Stay tuned for more information
and we look forward to seeing you at these
great events.
Thank you to our members, our board
of directors and my staff for the unparalleled
support that you provide and your
continuing dedication to the Construction
Association of Rural Manitoba. Let us continue
to build rural Manitoba together. n
